Wado Ryu Kata
In Karate, the term Kata refers to specified one-person exercises. One-person Katas are relatively uncommon in other Japanese martial arts such as Kenjutsu, Judo or Jujitsu. In Japanese martial arts, Katas are normally performed by two people. However, in Karate, two-person Katas are referred to as Kumite or Kumite Gata.Ohtsuka Sensei, the founder of Wado Ryu, learned the Karate Katas from Shotokan-ryu founder, Funakoshi Gichin, and was later influenced by Mabuni Kensa, founder of Shito-ryu and also Motobu Choki. All three instructors came from Okinawa.
Ohtsuka Sensei supplemented these Katas from Okinawa with his ideology and his concepts of Budo, thus defining the Wado Ryu Katas.
