Wado Ryu Kihon
Translated, Kihon means elementary school or basis. The learning and understanding of the sequencing of the individual Karate techniques is the focal point. When practicing, Kiihon has no set boundaries. This means that the techniques can be performed from any stance or while moving, alone or in combination with other moves, slowly or quickly.
In reality, performing a technique beautifully has no real benefit. In a real combat situation the techniques must be performed quickly, forcefully and precisely. For this reason, in Wado Ryu Karate, from the very beginning the emphasis is on avoiding unnecessary preparatory movements. Thus, when compared to other styles of Karate, the Kihon in Wado Ryu Karate appear to be somewhat more refined.
Kihon in Wado Ryu Karate is not only physically, but also mentally very strenuous, and as such requires a much more intense meditative character than Kata or Kumite. There is no avoiding oneself in Wado Ryu Kihon. One can either ignore oneself, one’s body, soul and feelings, or one can face them.
